Top 10 Types Of Social Media Posts For Pet Businesses

We often talk about using social media to grow your business but have you ever wondered what types of content you should be posting? Having a social media plan can be a game-changer as it ensures you’re posting a wide range of content and not repeating yourself.  Your content should be informative, educational and fun, to attract new clients and establish yourself as an expert in your field. Regardless of which platforms you use, these ideas will keep your feeds interesting and will grow both your audience and business.  We suggest keeping a list of posts in a spreadsheet so that you can space them out and cover all the different types of content in an intentional schedule.

1. Pet photos and video

Everyone loves looking at cute animals so posting photos of the pets in your care is ideal for showcasing your business.  Whether they’re your own pets or your clients’ pets (with their permission) try and post regular images, and also create videos if you can.  Make sure you don’t identify where the client lives, for reasons of privacy, and only name the pets with clients’ permission.

2. Educational posts

As an expert in your field you are bound to have plenty of tips for your audience.  This is really powerful content as it establishes you as an expert in your field.  It means people will trust their pets with you because you know what you’re doing.

3. Pet Awareness Days

There are so many different awareness days that relate to pets, including Pet Appreciation Week, Take Your Pet To Work Day and World Dog Day.  The list is endless and it can be hard to keep up, but we share many of them with you so that you don’t have to do the hard work seeking them out!

4. Story posts

Longer ‘story’ posts will help potential customers find out more about you and your business.  Here are some ideas for story posts :
  • Your origin story / how and why you started your business.
  • Case studies – successes you’ve had and how you’ve helped customers.

5. Blog Posts

If your website has a blog then make sure you share new posts on social media.  Don’t just post them once either – set up a schedule in your social media planning spreadsheet so that you can reshare them periodically too, especially the popular posts.

6. Testimonials

If you have any great customer testimonials then these are ideal for sharing on social media.  You can design an eyecatching graphic using Canva with a good ‘soundbite’ of the text on it, just a few words so that the quote is readable when people are scrolling.

7. Quotes and Memes

We all need a little motivation sometimes, or a laugh, so making quote and meme graphics is a great way to cheer up everyone’s day.

8. Ask your followers

To encourage engagement, you can ask followers a question, or run a poll or quiz. Use awareness days again for inspiration, and they don’t have to be pet related.  On World Baking Day ask followers what their favourite cake is, on Video Games Day ask what their first video game was (which will be very different depending on their age!) or on Best Friends Day ask what the most amazing thing their best friend has done for them.

9. Company news

Even the smallest company news item can be really good for sharing on social media.  This can be anything from general milestones (the anniversary of you starting the business, your birthday, your pets’ birthdays, your customers’ pets birthdays, the list is endless!) to any new services you’re offering.

10. Business recommendations

You can use your platform to share other local businesses that you’d recommend, as well as events such as a village fete, dog show or summer carnival.   You can mention businesses in your niche which aren’t direct competition, such as vets, animal shelters, groomers, kennels and training services.  You can recommend specific products whether it’s food, toys or pet-friendly hotels, restaurants and pubs.
