No matter what time of the year it is, setting clear, achievable goals will not only provide direction but also motivate you to reach new heights. You can then monitor them monthly or quarterly to see if you’re on track for success, and tweak things if needed.
In this post we share tips for what you can track as a pet sitter or dog walker, to see if your business is growing or simply treading water!
Define Your Goals
Whatever stage you are at in your business journey, there are plenty of goals you can track to monitor growth. Here are some examples which are simple measures of business performance and easy to check every month.
Financial Goals
- Monthly Income Target: Set a realistic monthly income target based on your current rates, desired hours worked, and local market demand.
- Booking Revenue: Aim for a specific percentage increase in booking revenue compared to the previous year.
Customer-Related Goals
- New Customer Acquisition: Set a target for the number of new clients you’d like to acquire each month or quarter.
- Customer Retention: Focus on retaining existing clients by offering incentives for repeat bookings or loyalty programmes.
Operational Goals
- Appointment Volume: Establish a target number of appointments per week or month.
- Service Expansion: Consider offering new services like overnight stays, pet taxi, or specialised care for specific breeds.
Marketing and Branding Goals
- Social Media Growth: Set a target for increasing your social media followers (e.g., Instagram, Facebook) by a specific percentage or to a particular number.
- Online Reviews: Aim for a certain number of positive online reviews on platforms like Google My Business, Facebook, or your own website.
- Website Visitors: If you have a website then track the number of users, pageviews or sessions each month using Google Analytics. It’s easy to set up and allows you to gather all sorts of information including where your traffic is coming from (e.g. social media, Google searches) and the demographic of your visitors.
- Happiness : As well as the metrics above, it’s important to prevent burnout so work/life balance is vital
Track Your Progress
If you allocate time every month to track progress then you’ll build up some really useful management information. It’s as simple as creating a spreadsheet with a row for each month and a column for each metric, for example:
- Monthly income (targets and actual)
- Number of customers
- Number of appointments
- Website visitors/pageviews
- Social media followers
- Most popular social media post(s)
For each month include a column for notes, so that you can write about any successes, explain why performance was achieved and any other observations you have.
You should schedule monthly or quarterly reviews to assess your progress. Analyse your results, identify any areas that need improvement, and make adjustments to your goals as needed.

Track Your Happiness: The Work-Life Balance Metric
Growth isn’t just measured in revenue; it’s also measured in sustainability. When setting your goals, include a non-financial metric dedicated to preventing burnout. Challenge yourself to track “Time Off/Rest Days Taken”. Reduce overwhelm by allocating time each day for you, whether it’s for exercise, reading or other things you do to relax.
Setting and achieving this goal ensures that while your business is thriving, you are also prioritizing your mental and physical health—because a rested pet sitter is a better pet sitter!
Year End Audit
Before you look forward, take a moment to look back. At the end of the year, explicitly review the goals you set 12 months ago. Which targets did you smash out of the park? Which ones fell short, and why? This annual audit is not about dwelling on failure; it’s about gaining critical insight into what strategies truly delivered results and what needs to be completely rethought for the coming year.
Don’t Forget Your Pricing Review
As a successful business owner, you must acknowledge that your operating costs, from petrol to insurance, increase annually. The end of the year is the perfect time to evaluate your pricing structure. Are your rates keeping pace with inflation, market demand, and your growing expertise? Ensure your financial goals for the new year are supported by rates that truly reflect the professional, premium service you provide.
Free Up Your Time: Create a “Stop Doing” List
Goal setting usually involves a “To Do” list, but for true efficiency, you also need a “Stop Doing” list. What inefficient, low-value tasks are you still clinging to? For example, spending too long on social media doom-scrolling, manually updating spreadsheets which you could automate or constantly checking email.
Identify tasks that waste time, delegate them, or find a tool to automate them, freeing up precious hours to focus on high-value goals like finding new customers and delivering the premium service you want to.
Stay Motivated
Running a business can be time consuming and stressful, so it’s vital to stay motivated. Here are our tips for celebrating your successes, however small:
- Learn and Adapt: Continuously learn and adapt your strategies based on your progress, market trends, and customer feedback.
- Network and Collaborate: Connect with other pet professionals and explore potential collaborations for mutual recommendations to boost both your business and theirs.
- Celebrate Milestones: Acknowledge and celebrate your successes along the way. This could be reaching a certain income target, acquiring a new client, or receiving positive feedback.
By setting clear goals, tracking your progress, and staying motivated, you can confidently navigate the year ahead and build a thriving pet sitting or dog walking business. Remember to stay flexible, adapt to changing circumstances, and most importantly, enjoy the journey!
I hope this blog post helps you set and achieve your business goals this year!
